Internship - Research Technician & Plant Breeding

The Job

We are looking for an Intern to join our team from May 1, 2025 - Oct. 15, 2025. The position will assist the Director of Research of the Smith Seed Services breeding program. The intern will be a seasonal part of a competitive variety development program in cool season cover crop, forage, and turfgrass species located in Halsey, Oregon. 

Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist with the making of spring crosses, and collection of variety morphological measurements. Participate in irrigation of crosses and assigned plant nurseries.
  • Aid in the harvest of seed produced from various nursery projects of the breeding program, from swathing of seed crops, through threshing, and final steps of seed conditioning.
  • Help with the establishment and collection of quality and yield data of trials and progeny nurseries, in laboratory, greenhouse, and field settings, at Smith Seed Services research facility, or its ancillary locations.
  • Assist Smith Seed Services Production Department in the roguing of seed stock fields, maintaining varietal uniformity.
