Species Summary

Phacelia, or lacy phacelia, is native forb with limited availability but increasing popularity for use as a cover crop and pollinator attractant. It is one of the top pollen producing plants for both honeybees and bumblebees, as well as many other pollinating insects. It is drought tolerant and can even grow well in areas with less than 20” of annual rainfall. Ideal for well-drained sandy soil.

Phacelia grows very fast, providing great competition to weeds, but is not winter hardy below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes it ideal for fall feed, wildlife and pollinator attractant, and short-term cover crop that will naturally terminate.

Uses

Cover crop

As a cover crop, phacelia is a super scavenger, gathering excess nitrogen and calcium for deposit back into the soil after it naturally winter kills. During its growth cycle, the complex roots increase soil aggregation in the uppermost soil profile.

Pollinator

With feathery lavender-blue flowers, phacelia attracts and feeds scores of necessary pollinators.
